Spike Lee’s film about a young jazz trumpetist’s life, brought on screen by a dashing Denzel Washington, functions as a showcase for contemporary African-American acting talent. The director’s father, jazz musician Bill Lee, has composed the score, with contributions from Branford Marsalis, whose quartet also performed the music, with Terence Blanchard on trumpet.
