Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, is a superb gathering of fifteen major jazz musicians. The band is fronted by Wynton Marsalis, the man who has succeeded through his extraordinary versatility, in projecting the notion of the ‘big band’ into the future. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra boasts a repertoire comprised of pieces composed by Wynton Marsalis, Ted Nash, Ron Westray and other members of the band, as well as masterpieces by jazz legends as Ellington, Mingus and Coltrane. The Orchestra is also involved in educational events. Wynton Marsalis played an important role in the re-structuring of the internationally acclaimed Jazz at Lincoln Center in 1987, and is still its artistic director. Besides his grasp of classic jazz and technical excellence, he has amazed listeners with a more modern and innovative style in his latest album, From the Plantation to the Penitentiary. Marsalis has also been deemed eligible for eight Grammies, the French ‘Grand Prix du Disque’ and the Edison Award in the Netherlands. The famous trumpet player and JALCO will be this year’s ‘Artists in Residence’, and will also be participating in workshop activities and talks.
