123 FEAT. ARVE HENRIKSEN

Founded in 2004, 123 stands out as one of the most original bands of Turkey’s music scene. The band realised their first album aksel in 2009 and arve in 2010, and subsequently gained an audience with their soothing yet complex music, combining jazz music with electronic elements. 123 will be accompanied by famous Norwegian trumpet player Arve Henriksen, who has collaborated with numerous artists including David Sylvian, Nils Petter Molvaer and is known for his unique trumpet technique that he derived from traditional Japanese music.

FERIT ODMAN QUINTET WITH STEFANO DI BATTISTA

Ferit Odman is regarded as one of the most important names of Turkey’s jazz scene despite his young age. Odman went to New York after finishing his studies on music. There, he studied jazz performance with masters such as Mulgrew Miller, Harold Mabern and Bill Goodwin. In this concert Ferit Odman Quintet will be accompanied by Italian saxophonist Stefano di Battista. Di Battista put out his debut recording Volare in 1997. The album kicked up a lot of attention. For his next album, Di Battista started working with famous jazz label Blue Note and established himself as an important saxophonist.

SERDAR BARÇIN FEAT. IBRAHIM MAALOUF

Serdar Barçın studied flute at Hacettepe Ankara University Conservatory. He has collaborated with prominent musicians and singers in the jazz and pop scene. Famous for his energetic flute technique and exiting improvisations, Barçın released his fusion-jazz album Barbun at the end of 2010. In this concert, Barçın will share the stage with the well-known trumpeter, composer and arranger Ibrahim Maalouf. Maalouf is one of the rare musicians who continue the tradition of quarter tone trumpet. Strongly inspired by Arabic culture and music, Maalouf’s music is garnished with jazz-funk, contemporary rock and electronic flavours.

ALP ERSÖNMEZ “CEREYANLI” FEAT. BUGGE WESSELTOFT

One of the leading figures of bass in Turkey, composer and arranger Alp Ersönmez will perform with famous Norwegian pianist, composer and producer Bugge Wusseltoft. In his “Cereyanlı” project, Ersonmez combines jazz and funk compositions with computer-based electronic music. Bugge Wesseltoft, one of the pioneer musicians who combines electronic and jazz music, created his own music style by fusing elements of jazz, house, ambient, noise and free improvisation within the framework of his project “New Conception of Jazz.” Since 2004, Wesseltoft carries on his solo project which covers a broad spectrum: from melodic piano parts to experimental and atonal music.

SELEN GÜLÜN TRIO (WITH PATRICK ZAMBONIN, JÖRG MIKULA)

Well equipped with writing and performing techniques, pianist Selen Gülün is one of the leading composers of Turkey’s jazz scene. Gülün received her M.A degree from Berklee College of Music where she formed the band Just About Jazz. Selen Gülün Trio is the continuation of this previous band and was formed by Selen Gülün with bassist Patrick Zambonin and drummer Jörg Mikula. The trio performs Gülün’s original music which is elegant, impressive and dramatic.

ÇAĞRI SERTEL TRIO FEAT. WOLFGANG MUTHSPIEL

Formed by one of the leading figures of Turkey’s jazz scene, Çağrı Sertel Trio joins together with the world-renowned guitarist and composer Wolfgang Muthspiel. Discovering his interest in music when he was given a toy keyboard at the age of 12, Çağrı Sertel then studied piano-composition. As part of Çağrı Sertel Trio, he realised the album Newborn in 2010. Distinguished for his dazzling technique, Wolfgang Muthspiel is also known for his music that embraces openness, as well as his various projects and collaborations with prominent jazz artists.
