Presenting a festival within the festival, Tünel Feast started last year and was highly popular. With its numerous concerts, events and workshops held in different concert venues and open-air stages, Tünel Feast will take in every corner of Tünel with a jazz marathon on Saturday, July 2. Performers of the night include Neil Cowley Trio, The Souljazz Orchestra, Okay Temiz, Mdungu, East Park Reggae Collective, Elif Çağlar, Jehan Barbur and Emir Ersoy.

London-born pianist Neil Cowley studied classical music at the prestigious Royal Academy and by the age of 17, he went on to record and tour with some soul and funk bands. With his band Fragile State founded in 2002, Cowley recorded well-received albums. He continues his musical journey with Neil Cowley Trio founded by Cowley, Richard Sadler (double bass) and Evan Jenkins (drums) in 2006. The band has released three albums since then and is among the foremost bands of the British post-jazz movement with their music that blurs the boundaries between jazz and other genres.

Drawing their inspiration from the golden age of soul music during the 60s and 70s, Canadian band the Souljazz Orchestra fuses funk, soul, afro and Latin rhythms. The multicultural group formed in 2002 in Ottowa, has shared the stage with major stars such as Femi Kuti, Etta James, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Érik Truffaz and Joshua Redman and realised their third studio album in February 2010. The Souljazz Orchestra will take their audience to a journey around the world.

Amsterdam-based Mdungu promises you a strong musical experience. The band’s music creates a chemical reaction that is hard to resist, making people dance. WithB their album AFRO WHAT!? released in 2009, Mdungu made a swinging mix of West-African music, funk, rock and jazz and provided a breath of fresh air for the European music scene.

Founded by Johnny Tomlinson and Tommy Evan in 2005, East Park Reggae Collective (EPRC) combines political frustration and a love for music. With their dub, reggae and ska infused music, EPRC have performed at various festivals and supported artists such as The Skatellites, The Wailers, Irration Steppa, Dawn Penn, Pama Int, Scratch Perverts, Faithless, Mad Professor amongst others. East Park Reggae Collective promises a performance full of spirit at the Tünel Feast.

An accomplished musician who not only created his own style but also crafted his own instruments, Okay Temiz is an internationally known musician who took part in various bands and collaborated with many important artists during his career that spans over 50 years. Temiz plays numerous percussion instruments that he has either collected or crafted and his music trod on a wide range from Western jazz to traditional Turkish music.

With her critically acclaimed album M.U.S.I.C released this year, Elif Çağlar increased her fan base and now joins the Tünel Feast with her silky voice and impressive rendition. After studying “Jazz Composition” at Istanbul Bilgi University, Çağlar moved to New York to study Jazz Performance in Queens College where she studied with Sheila Jordan and graduated with an award. One of the most promising jazz singers in Turkey, Çağlar has participated in numerous festivals including the 7th and 17th Istanbul Jazz Festival.

Born in 1980, Jehan Barbur began her professional music career in 2002 and has since released two solo albums entitled Uyan and Hayat. As a vocalist and song writer, she has worked with various musicians in many different projects. Standing out with her compositions, Barbur is also the producer of her last album Hayat released in 2010. Barbur’s smooth voice and warm vocals will captivate her audience.

Emir Ersoy started his career as a musician by playing on stage with his father Metin Ersoy, known as the “King of Calypso.”He continued his musical journey with various groups he formed with Cuban musicians and released his Latin-jazz album entitled Cuban Portrait in 2009. Working with some of the leading artists of Turkey, Emir Ersoy is also the founder of the band Emir Ersoy & Project Cubano. Ersoy will take in Tünel with Latin and salsa melodies.

Yahya Dai has been performing since the late 80s with different projects, playing baritone, tenor, alto, soprano, saxophone, ewi (electronic wind), flute and block flute. He contributed to more than 20 jazz albums, and performed at numerous festivals in Turkey and abroad. His computerised one-man project, “B Planı” (Plan B) demonstrates the encounter of contemporary electronic facilities and live performance programmes with the personal history of the artists reflected in his instrument.

Developed as an artistic project based on contemporary improvisation and composition, Spiral Quartet’s sound is influenced by modern jazz, as well as contemporary music. The quartet renders compositions and jazz standards, as well as a few Turkish traditional songs with their own unique and exiting style. Led by saxophone master Philippe Poussard, Spiral Quartet is comprised of Christian Lété (drums), François-Charles Delacoudre (double bass) and Bruno Angelini (piano).

Developing her own vocal style by enriching jazz with Turkish tradition, Sanem Kalfa is recognised as one of the most promising voices of the contemporary jazz scene. Having studied cello during her high school and university years, the vocalist went to the Netherlands to study jazz singing. There and in New York, she worked with distinguished teachers such as Dena de Rose, Jd Walter, Gretchen Parlato, Sheila Jordan, Roberta Gambarini. Senem Kalfa also won the first prize for Jazz Voice Competition in 2010 at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival.

Samba and choro, which has its origins in Rio de Janerio, will fill the air! Lilian Vieira on vocals and Grupa Cariopa bring to life the atmosphere of the samba city with their cheerful, melancholic and light-hearted music. Along with Vieira, the octet also has Fulvia di Domenic and Nassan Lopes on vocals. Traditional Brazilian instruments and brass instruments such as saxophone and clarinet, as well as percussions come together to produce an authentic sound.

Formed by “mestre” Jozi Levi, the first name that comes to mind when one thinks of “Brazilian music” and “samba,” “Jozi Levi Brazil Project” got together in 2008. The band has a repertory, presenting a jazz-infused blend of bossa nova, samba, pagode and baiao songs under the umbrella of Brazil’s popular music genre MPB (Musica Popular Brazileira).

Starting to play the piano at the age of seven, Meltem Ege later graduated from Bilkent University Music and Performing Arts Piano Division. Winning the first prize at the 12th Finland “Lady Summertime” Jazz Singing Competition, the artist continued her studies at Berklee College of Music. Meltem Ege will further enliven the Tunnel Fest with her warm and crystalline voice.

Emerging in recent years as one of the most successful jazz vocals, Sezgi Olgaç is at the Tünel Fest with her trio. Sharing the stage with the leading jazz artists of Turkey such as Önder Focan and Neşet Ruacan, Sezgi Olgaç has worked with artists such as Sibel Köse, Randy Esen, Donovan Mixon. Rendering jazz standards in their unique way, this trio consists of Sezgi Olgaç accompanied by successful jazz pianist Adem Gülşen and prominent guitarist Emre Tankal.

Playing the guitar since 1988, Bora Çeliker founded several blues bands during the late 90s, and in 1999 started playing jazz with Janusz Szprot. Known for his be-bop and jazz renditions, Çeliker continues to work with many prominent musicians such as Sarp Maden, Nilüfer Verdi, Neşet Ruacan, Cem Aksel, Ferit Odman, Ricky Ford.

Starting to play the piano during her primary school years, Başak Yavuz continued her musical career while studying architecture at the same time. She studied jazz with Sibel Köse, jazz vocal with Randy Esen, music theory with Baki Duyarlar and singing with Tülin Uyar. After completing singing courses in the New York School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, she was admitted to the masters program of the Manhattan School of Music. With her graceful and velvety vocals, Başak Yavuz will be at the Tünel Fest.

Starting to take piano lessons at the age of five, Ece Göksu performed at İstanbul’s leading jazz clubs and festivals such as Nardis, Istanbul Jazz Center and the Istanbul Jazz Festival. After receiving the Fulbright Scholorship, she went to New Jersey to study jazz vocal. There she worked with Nancy Marano, Cecil Bridgewater and Mulgrew Miller. Following her return to Turkey, Göksu continues to study music and gives performances at different venues.
