Presenting a festival within the festival, the highly-popular Tünel Feast is now entering its third year. With its numerous concerts, events and workshops held in different concert venues and open air stages, Tünel Feast will take in every corner of Tünel with a jazz marathon on Saturday, 7 July. Around thirty artists and bands will perform at 17 different venues during this six-hour night which will turn into an unlimited street feast.

The concerts of Eric Vloeimans, New Cool Collective, Lefties Soul Connection, Jungle By Night and Ntjam Rosie are curated by the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Istanbul Jazz Festival. These artist are supported by the Kingdom of Netherlands within the framework of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Turkey and Netherlands.

Performing contemporary jazz with a nod to funk, blues and electronic music with his quartet Gatecrash, Dutch trumpet virtuoso Eric Vloeimans merges himself and his instrument into a single entity, playing the trumpet with great mastery, warmth and fearlessness. Winner of four Edison awards, the artist also composes soundtracks. The band features Eric Vloeimans on trumpet, Jeroen van Vliet on Fender Rhodes, Jasper van Hulten on drums and Gulli Gudmundsson on bass.

JUNGLE BY NIGHT

Hailing from Amsterdam, nine-headed ensemble Jungle By Night plays Afrobeat and jazz tunes with a rock attitude. Entertaining the crowds in festivals such as North Sea Jazz and Lowlands, the band also opened the concert for the Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke. Preparing to record their first full-length album this fall, the band previously celebrated the release of their EP album in an impressive concert at Melkwegconcerthall which was packed with their fans.

NEW COOL COLLECTIVE

One of the most important representatives of Dutch jazz, eight-piece ensemble New Cool Collective brought countless venues to the boiling point. Integrating soul and Latin flavours into their music, New Cool Collective won numerous awards and has toured extensively; playing at major rock and pop festivals. Releasing a Big Band album called Pachinko in 2010, the ensemble released their last album entitled Eighteen with a smaller team of eight musicians in November 2011.

LEFTIES SOUL CONNECTION

Funk and soul band Lefties Soul Connection have performed across Europe, and released three albums Hutspot (2006), Skimming the Skum (2007), and One Punch Pete (2011) resulting in a high number of followers. Lefties Soul Connection, featuring Onno Smit on guitar, Alviz on Hammond organ and back vocals, Pieter Bakker on bass and Cody Vogel on drums will be accompanied by gospel singer Michelle David in this concert. Paul Willemsen will be on guitar.

COLUMBIA JAZZ BAND

With members coming from a variety of professions, 20-year-old big band has played in prestigious festivals such as Montreux and Switzerland, along with premier jazz clubs. The band has two albums entitled Live in Europe and Columbia Jazz Band: Live and Swinging!, and is directed by prominent musician Peter BarenBragge who has collaborated with top names including Dizzy Gillespie, Randy and Michael Brecker, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and recorded over 31 albums.

YOUNG FELLAZ BRASS BAND

The soul of the street meets with jazz. Festival’s street concerts series continues this year with Young Fellaz Brass Band from New Orleans. Affected by the changes brought about by Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans music scene was renewed with the efforts of bands such as Young Fellaz Brass Band founded by musicians that came from all over the country. Formed by musicians with different musical backgrounds to present a large swath of exiting music, Young Fellaz Brass Band play a variety of styles from pop and R&B to rock and Hip-hop, all based on the brass band tradition. The Young Fellaz Brass Band is always going to play music that is happy, making you clap your hands and move your feet.

GEVENDE

One of the strongest bands of Turkey’s alternative music scene, Gevende joins the Tünel Feast. Thanks to their projects and collaborations with other musicians, Gevende’s reputation goes beyond the borders. Employing voice as another instrument, Gevende can be described as a psychedelic/folk rock band, yet they defy the limits of any musical genre. The band released their first album Ev which was followed by their second album Sen Balık Değilsin (2011), featuring Eivind Aarset as contributor.

NTJAM ROSIE

Garden of the Netherlands Consulate

A voice full of strength and spirit, Ntjam Rosie will be at the Tunel Feast with her distinctive style that creates an astonishing set. Singing and writing her own songs, Rosie released her first album ATOUBA in 2008, which was followed by ELLE (2010Winner of the Music Matters Award, Rosie has performed in major jazz clubs and festivals such as The Hague Jazz, Dunya, Numoonfest, Mundial and North Sea Jazz Roundtown.

SALINCAK NEŞ’E VE DANS ORKESTRASI

Inspired by the period when jazz music was making its move from New Orleans to other cities and played a pivotal role in shaping people’s life overshadowed by the WW2, Salıncak Neş’e ve Dans Orkestrası makes original and playful arrangements of the Big Band songs of the era. Focusing on the words “feast”, “joy” and “dance,” the band has a contemporary sound mixed with humour and improvisation. Whatever your music taste is, you will find something for yourself in this show.

GERHARD AFLENZER BROADWAY JAMMERS

After playing in numerous big bands in Austria, Gerhard Aflenzer founded his own entitled Gerhard Aflenzer Broadway Bigband in 1995. Since then, he has performed in well-known concert halls across Europe. In his Istanbul concert, Gerhard Aflenzer will be accompanied by vocalists Eva Hag and Martin Böhm, along with the six-piece band the Broadway Jammers and perform songs from icons such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Liza Minnelli, Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe.

ÇAĞIL KAYA ‘HAPPY PEOPLE’

After her graduation from Dokuz Eylül University’s Musicology Department, Çağıl Kaya went to Istanbul University to pursue her music studies. Studying jazz vocal and improvisation with Randy Esen and Elif Çağlar, she also participated to Sibel Köse’s workshops. She performs with her band “Çağıl Kaya Band” and has been the lead vocal of Happy People since 2009. Happy People’s repertory mainly consists of R&B and jazz.

After her studies at Müjdat Gezen Arts Center, Jülide Özçelik went to Istanbul Bilgi University’s Music Department. There she worked with masters such as Nükhet Ruacan, Randy Esen, Yıldız İbrahimova, Can Kozlu, İmer Demirer, RaDonovan Mixon, Ricky Ford and Timur Selçuk. Her critically-acclaimed debut album Jazz Istanbul Volume-1 was released in 2008, followed by her second album Jazz Istanbul Volume-2 (2011). The Istanbul series features Özçelik’s compositions as well as unique jazz renditions of Anatolian folk songs.

Finnish vocalist Johanna Försti and drummer/producer Teppo Mäkynen combine the vintage soul with the energy of the day with their new project Jo Stance. Bringing together modern jazz with rock’n roll vocalism, Jo Stance’s music is instantly approachable. On stage, Försti, who blends her charisma with her impeccable vocal skills and Mäkynen, the drummer of the brightest ensembles of Finland jazz, will be accompanied by five talented musicians.

Known for being an extremely versatile drummer/percussionist, Robert Mehmet Sinan İkiz was born in Istanbul in 1979. He went to Stockholm Music Conservatory Afro-American Music Program and then to Los Angeles Music Academy to pursue his studies in music. Studying with Tony Inzalaco, Sherman Ferguson and Joe Porcaro, İkiz released his first solo album Checking In under his own label in 2012. İkiz was also awarded three times by the Swedish Royal Music Academy for his talents as a percussionist and jazz artist.

FERİT ODMAN QUARTET

Odman started to play drums at the age of 12. He studied at Bilgi University’s Jazz Performance Program and had his MA degree in Jazz Performance from William Paterson University where he worked with Mulgrew Miller. Conducting his studies in New York for the last two years, Odman released his first album Nommo in 2010. In 2011, he recorded his second album Autumn In New York. Odman performs with his own band, as well as with Kerem Görsev Trio.

VOLKAN POLAT TRIO

Working together previously, these three musicians came together as Volkan Polat Trio for this year’s festival. The band performs jazz standards as well as Volkan Polat’s own compositions. The band features Volkan Polat on guitar Olgun Açar on drums and Baran Say on double bass.

CAN ERCAN QUARTET

Starting to become interested in jazz music in his university years, Can Ercan worked on jazz guitar with Peter Bernstein, Ben Monder, Tomaso Lama, Pietro Condorelli, Roberto Nannetti. He has played with Bobby Watson, Ferenc Nemeth, Achille Succi, Massimo Manzi, Luigi Campoccia, Fulvio Maras, Della Miles, Yavuz Darıdere, Tamer Temel and studied harmony with Ömür Gidel. Can Ercan performs his own compositions and arrangements, as well as jazz standards.

Involved in music and theatre studies throughout her life, İlay Bal won the inter-university talent competition organised in Prag in 2011. Bal will share the stage with Gremen Bızıkacıları, featuring young and talented musicians: Barış Baykan (d), Ege Cengiz (tr), Umut Ünleyen (p) and Emre Tez (b).

WISHBOOM

Founded by Caner Gültekin in 2011, Wishboom Band has a range of compositions that nods to a variety of styles from modern and Latin jazz to funk, along with songs by world-renowned jazz musicians. Underlining that they do not have a prior jazz education, the band members try to perform jazz music based on their own personal studies.

SEZGİ OLGAÇ TRIO

Emerging in recent years as one of the most successful jazz vocals, Sezgi Olgaç will be at the Tunel Feast with her trio. Sharing the stage with the leading jazz artists of Turkey such as Önder Focan and Neşet Ruacan, Sezgi Olgaç also worked with important masters such as Sibel Köse, Randy Esen, Danovan Mixon. Rendering a repertory ranging from jazz standards to songs by Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell in her unique way, Sezgi Olgaç is accompanied by successful jazz pianist Adem Gülşen and prominent guitarist Emre Tankal.

OZAN MUSLUOĞLU TRIO

One of the most talented and promising double bass players in Turkey, Ozan Musluoğlu entered Bilgi University’s Music Department in 2000. Musluoğlu released two albums and is preparing to release his third studio album My Best Friends Are Piano Players this year. Currently working as a double bass artist in TRT Jazz Orchestra, the musician is also known with his jazz programme called “Caz Saati.”

THE 57 QUINTET

Three young musicians from Berklee School of Music, Bulut Gülen (trombone), Utar Artun (keyboards and piano) and Ekin Cengizkan (drums, electronics), worked with prominent musicians such as McCoy Tyner, Dave Fiuczynski, Eugene Maslov, Hüsnü Şenlendirici, Jason Lindner and Panaigiotis Andreou. For their performance at the Tünel Feast, the band will play their own songs with the accompaniment of Tamer Temel and Ozan Musluoğlu.

PHRONESIS

A jazz trio which gained increasing attention in Europe over the last few years, Phronesis captured the hearts and minds of British audiences and developed a successful reputation outside Britain as well. Described by Jazzwise Magazine as “the most exciting and imaginative piano trio since EST,” and receiving critical acclaim for their live performances, the trio, has four albums. Phronesis features Jasper Høiby on double bass, Ivo Neame on piano and Anton Eger on drums.
This event is realised within the scope of Talent Opportunity Program of International Jazz Festivals Organisation and hosted by SALT Beyoğlu.

ZEYNEP ARABACIOĞLU LATINO Y LADINO PROJECT

With the accompaniment of boleros and ballads, Zeynep Arabacıoğlu sets on a musical journey that starts from the 15th century Spain to today’s Istanbul. Arabacıoğlu studied with Gül Sabar, Ayhan Sicimoğlu, Jozi Levi and Luiz Ernesto Gomez. The founder and manager of Arte Istanbul Art Centre, Arabacıoğlu has been the lead vocal of Ayhan Sicimoğlu & Latin All Stars since its foundation in 2003 and worked with Latin masters such as Alfredo de la Fe, Armando Miranda and Frankie Morales.

Social Inclusion Band (SIB) is an innovative social project supported by Türkiye Vodefone Asscoation in cooperation with the UN Development Program and run by Alternative Life Association (AYDER) Association, founder and coordinator of numerous projects, helping disabled or disadvantaged youngsters to connect with the rest of the society.

ATEŞ TEZER TRIO

The Marmara Pera Brasserie

Ateş Tezer Trio released their debut album Sahil in November, 2008. With their unique style, the band renders their own songs and jazz standards with their unique style. Ateş Tezer Trio features Uğur Güneş on piano, Volkan Hürsever on double bass and Ateş Tezer on drums. Before going to Berklee School of Music, Ateş Tezer worked with masters such as Mahmut Yalay and Bülent Gülcen. Tezer continues to give performances at numerous clubs and festivals, along with working on his other side projects.

OKAY TEMİZ RHYTHM WORKSHOP

Okay Temiz Rhythm Workshop

Founded in 1998 by Okay Temiz, “Okay Temiz Rhythm Workshop” has given rhythm training to thousands of participants. Okay Temiz Rhythm Workshop also gives impetus to the rhythm festival with its “Rhythm Day” concert held for the 10th time this year and brings together world-renowned percussionists with their students. The workshop aims to introduce percussion to all sections of the society from children and adult groups to company team works.

BODY MUSIC-GÖKÇE GÜRÇAY

Known also as body percussion, Body Music is a form of dance-music in which the whole body is used as an instrument. Standing right on top of music and movement, body music is probably the first way of making music before people started to build instruments. Having sections that reflect body music traditions and collective improvisation methods from all over the world, the show invites the audience to music with its interactive side.

** Feast Unlimited provides access to concerts at the garden of the Netherlands Consulate General and Nardis, in addition to all other concerts. Concerts at Tünel and Galata Main Stages, The Marmara Pera Cafe, Beyoğlu Municipality Youth Centre, and Tünel KaVe are free of charge. Admissions to concerts can be temporarily halted if venue capacity is exceeded.
