TÜNEL CONCERTS

Having presented a festival within the festival for the last three years, the Tünel Feast will be organised this year as “Tünel Concerts”. Among the guests of the concerts to be held in different venues in the Tünel area are Matthias Eick, Roos Jonker, Bruut!, Salvatore Bonafede Trio, Tin Men and The Telephone, Maffy Falay Quintet, Dilek Sert Erdoğan and TBC Brass Band among others.

During the Tünel Concerts, you can visit the Museum of Innocence between 18.00-19.00 and listen to the concert of Volkan Topakoğlu (double bass) & Siney Yılmaz (saxophone) Duo.

SWING UNLTD.

18.00-19.00, Garden of the Consulate of the Netherlands

Master musician Ergüven Başaran’s special project Swing Unltd. will heat up the night with swing classics. Composed of saxophonist Ergüven Başaran, trumpeter, arranger and pianist Aydın Özarı, trumpeter Halil Yiğit, trombone player Elvan Aracı, drummer Önder Erol and acoustic bass guitarist Nezih Yeşilnil, Swing Unltd’s songs are arranged by Emin Fındıkoğlu.

TAYLAN CEMGİL TRIO

Bass guitarist Taylan Cemgil has recorded and played with Sarp Maden, Tolga Tüzün, Selen Gülün, Ali Perret, Cengiz Baysal, Tuluğ Tırpan and Yavuz Akyazıcı. He went to the Netherlands to pursue his studies on music and sound analysis. He continued his studies on bass guitar at Amsterdam Jazz Conservatory. He makes studio recordings and gives club performances.

GENÇ CAZ YOUNG JAZZ: CAN ERCAN QUARTET

Can Ercan became interested in jazz during his university days. He studied jazz guitar with Can Ercan, Peter Bernstein, Ben Monder, Tomaso Lama, Pietro Condorelli, Roberto Nannetti, and harmony with Ömür Gidel. He won a scholarship from Siena Jazz Fondazione. He won a prize in Nardis Young Jazz Guitar Contest. Ercan renders jazz standards, as well as his own compositions and arrangements.

MAFFY FALAY BEŞLİSİ

19.15-20.30, Italian Cultural Centre

One of the greatest jazz artists from Turkey, legendary trumpeter Muvaffak “Maffy” Falay is among the guests of Tünel Concerts, where he will be performing with Can Çankaya (trumpet), Elvan Aracı (trombone), Engin Recepoğlulları (saxophone), Kaan Yıldız (bass guitar) and Ferit Odman (drums). Do not miss the opportunity to listen to this legendary trumpetist who was presented with the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

DİLEK SERT ERDOĞAN

Moments Considered as one of the most important soul vocals in Turkey in recent years, Dilek Sert Erdoğan will be on stage at the Tünel Concerts, with the first concert of her album Moments released in April. The first original soul album in Turkey, the album’s music and lyrics are written by the artist herself. Dilek Sert Erdoğan will be accompanied by the musical director of her album “Wizard” Genco Arı.

ROOS JONKER

19.45-21.00, Garden of the Consulate of the Netherlands

Mmmmm’ . Her fame goes well beyond the Netherlands to reach Japan. Roos Jonker not only sings, but also plays the piano, harp, saxophone and also writes her own tunes. Her lyrics are creative and layered in meaning. Jonker’s debut album Mmmmm, which was chosen as the “Breakthrough Album of the Year” on iTunes, was released in 2010 to critical acclaim.

GENÇ CAZ YOUNG JAZZ: EZGİ BICILI QUINTET

Ezgi Bıcılı started to take piano lessons at a young age and studied at the Fine Arts Vocational High School and music training department. She worked with conductor Ahter Destan in Ankapella Chamber Chorus and continued to perform as a vocalist in various orchestras. While performing jazz standards, the band is influenced by traditional renditions as well as funk, soul and R&B.

TIN MEN & THE TELEPHONE

Incorporating sounds found in daily life to their music and combining these with theatrical and visual elements, A Tin Men and the Telephone offers a unique experience. This is a new form of jazz that is both fun and with musical depth, inviting those who want to hear something new.

TBC BRASS BAND

20.30-21.30, Indigo

To Be Continued Brass Band, also known as TBC brings the soul of New Orleans streets to Istanbul. Formed in 2002, TBC Brass Band brings together brass band and jazz and has become one of the legendary bands of New Orleans in a short time. In 2005, they also began working with The Roots and are one of the finest representatives of the time-honoured New Orleans tradition known as “the second line.”

GENÇ CAZ YOUNG JAZZ: DENİZ TAŞAR QUARTET

Since making her first stage appearance in Robert College’s orchestra as a vocalist, Deniz Taşar has taken part in various projects and bands. The winner of Nardis Jazz Vocal Contest 2013, Taşar formed the quartet with Şentürk Öztürk who studies jazz bass at the Yıldız Technical University. Together, they render jazz standards and some R&B songs with their own arrangements.

SALVATORE BONAFADE

21.30-22.45, Italian Cultural Centre

Italian pianist and composer Salvatore Bonafade is one of the top musicians of the Italian jazz scene with his albums winning best album awards, along with his multi-awarded film scores and works as a jazz instructor. Also known as a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Salvatore performed with Dewey Redman, Joshua Redman, Lew Tabackin and Joe Lovano.

BRUUT!

22.30-23.30, Indigo

When Dutch jazz quartet Bruut! introduced their audience with “superjazz,” their reception was highly positive. Blending jazz, rhythm and blues in their own unique way, the quartet has a stage performance that defies manners in the world of jazz. Added to that, the band was highly praised with their self-titled debut album released in 2012.

GENÇ CAZ YOUNG JAZZ: TOLGA ERZURUMLU TRIO

The trio features Tolga Erzurumlu on piano and keyboards, Cemal Sönmezkale on bass guitar and Ahmet Zilci on drums. The trio stands out with their competence on their instruments and the jazz standards they perform, as well as their renditions influenced by modern jazz.

FULYA AKÇA & BUKET ZOR

Two finalists of the Nardis Jazz Vocal Contest will perform at the Tünel Concerts, accompanied by Uraz Kıvaner Trio. Playing the piano and flute, Fulya Akça was also a finalist in 2012’de JAmZZ Akbank Jazz Festival Young Talents contest. A finalist of the same contest, Buket Zor plays the piano and makes vocals. After studying with Yıldız İbrahimova, she continues her jazz studies with Meltem Ege.

MATHIAS EICK QUINTET

One of Norway’s most promising young talents, Mathias Eick solidified his success with albums released from German ECM. Eick is also a member of famous Nordic jazz band Jaga Jazzist. Playing various instruments such as trumpet, double bass, vibraphone, piano and guitar, Eick is influences by Scandinavian soundscape, as well as the lyricism and melancholy of the American master trumpeter Kenny Wheeler.
